The Rewards of Volunteering
Danielle, one of our regular volunteers, was initially looking for a way to fulfull her CSER requirement for Liberty University. After training to walk dogs at the pound, she decided to spend extra hours socializing the litter of tiny puppies who were desperate for attention, prior to their transfer to a foster home.
While we don't always have tiny puppies for volunteers to work with, we always have dogs who crave attention, love, and companionship. Volunteers also provide walks, potty breaks, and interaction so necessary for the shy or withdrawn dogs to come out of their shells.
Fill out an application online to volunteer working with both cats and dogs. ( You must be at least eighteen years of age to help out at the county pound.) |
Glenda’s Story
Do you have room in your heart and home for a true rescue?
Glenda came to us in June of 2008 after she was turned into the county pound as a stray. She quickly caught the eye of one of our volunteers who has a fondness for orange tabbies. We quickly transferred her into HSCC care and began working on preparing her for adoption. Those preparations came to a screeching halt the day she went for her spay. Our dear Glenda, tested positive Feline Immunodeficiency Virus, or FIV. Volunteers who had come to love Glenda were heartbroken because we knew the road to Glenda’s new forever home would potentially be a long one. We decided to continue with Glenda’s preparation for adoption and keep our fingers crossed that someone special would come along. After a year and a half, Glenda still waits patiently for her forever family to find her. While FIV can cause chronic illnesses due to having a lowered ability to fight infection, Glenda has been healthy as a horse for the past year and a half while in our care. She has not been sick a single day since coming to us. Glenda loves people and enjoys getting attention from the volunteers who care for the cats. She gets along just fine with other cats but should more than likely be in a home with either only FIV cats or where she can be separated from non-infected cats. She is laid back and relaxed but also has a little bit of a playful side. She is fine with older children and we suspect due to her laid back personality she’d be fine with gentle, young children.
Now a little about FIV…. Feline immunodeficiency virus (FIV) causes an infectious disease in domestic cats, as well as big cats in the wild, similar to human immunodeficiency virus (HIV infection) in humans. It attacks and weakens the body's immune system, making the animal susceptible to infections and diseases that don't usually affect healthy cats.
-
FIV is NOT feline leukemia, or FeLV.
-
FIV is NOT an automatic death sentence for infected cats.
-
FIV is NOT transmitted by prolonged close contact, as is the case for FeLV. FIV is shed in the saliva and is usually transmitted by bite wounds
-
FIV is NOT transmitted to humans.
-
FIV+ cats can live many happy, healthy years with no signs of illness. |

Petsmart Adoption Center Cage Cleaners-URGENT
We are in DESPERATE need of volunteers to clean cages at our Petsmart adoption center. The center has been closed since the end of July and reopened the last week in September. A brief training session is required prior to starting. If you are intersted in helping to staff the adoption center, please fill out an online volunteer application.
Adoption Counselors Needed

Do you want to do something special for a cat waiting to be adopted?
Consider a donation of a Kuranda cat bed. Cats LOVE to jump and climb. These patented Kuranda beds give cats a comfortable place to lounge or a fun place to play. When placed in a cage, they allow for much more space for the cat to move. Please consider donating one of these beds today. Our goal is to equip all of the cages with these beds as well as have a few for our colony rooms. Visit the Kuranda site for more information on these beds: http://kuranda.com/cat-beds/standard-cat-bed/
Tax-deductible donations can be made to HSCC towards the purchase of these beds or you may order one and have it shipped directly to us.

The HSCC adoption contract stipulates that adopters return their companions to the HSCC for placement if for any reason the adoption does not work out, or circumstances change. We enjoy matching up dogs to families, and if you want to keep your pet with you while we look for a new home, we appreciate it. Please DO NOT give your adopted pet away! Even a family with the best intentions does not consider some of the problems that can arise with "Free to a Good Home" ad.
